River Sand

Sand, preferably Fresh water river sand, is easily available and therefore cheap. It consists mostly of rounded quartz grains and therefore it is very stable.

Only “washed”, salt free sand, should be used.

Sand is heavy, does not decompose, does not hold water, and comes in various sizes. It is used to improve the water permeability and air circulation.

A layer of "coarse" sand is often placed above perlite or other light materials used in potting mixes to prevent loss from floating away during watering. It can be re-used but must be sterilized first.
