Dendrochilum |
Dendrochilum is a genus of over 120 species of orchids. The evergreen plants, grow as epiphytes, lithophytes or terrestrials in the rainforests of South East Asia and New Guinea, with most species found in Borneo and Philippines. There are dozens of species still to be discovered. These orchids were almost unknown 20 years ago, but today they are very popular, especially Dendrochilum wenzelii. The flower spikes can grow up to 50cm long and can be almost erect or arching. The miniature, star-shaped blooms, that can be fragrant, form rows. The pseudo-bulbs are unrecognizable, the almost cylindrical stems are small and the single or double leaves can be up to 50cm long. The plants are easy to grow, tolerate and prefer cool conditions. Grow well in pots, in a good potting mix that retains some moisture. In summer prefer to be under shade but in winter they do not mind lots of light.
