Leaf mulch

Leaves fallen from most plants or trees and are at a very early stage of decomposition, can be used as ‘mulch’.

It is obvious that the leaves of some plants or trees produce better mulches than others.

The decayed leaves produce one of the best soil conditioners adding humus to the soil. Mulch also keeps the soil moist, improves the soil structure and drainage, and encourages soil microbial activity.

The breakdown of Leaf Mulch is slow. Use only dry leaves.

Leaf mulch is good for terrestrial orchids. Practically, most orchids in nature are surrounded by leaf mulch.
